0000_005_1921 reunion, Abilene

This is a group photo taken at the 1921 Pile Family Reunion, Aug 22 - 24, 1921 at Smith Hall, Simmons College, Abilene TX. The red numbers on each person are used to identify that person and as a link to their names. You can find their names by scrolling down to the cutouts. Cutouts are photos of the attendees, individual by individual made by cropping or cutting them from the group photo. The caption beneath each cutout will contain the individual's name. You can also view the table of attendees that is coded with the individual code numbers. Results shown here are close but probably not the final word on this project. There are a few children who have not been adquately identified and an elderly couple. However, based on currently available information, these results are about as good as they get.

The project to put names to the 1921 and 1923 reunion photos was conducted by Jim Downing. Thanks to Kathy Hartman for preserving and supplying these photos. Jim Downing.

Invitation to the 1921 Pyle Family Reunion

The following link opens a spreadsheet that I made during this project. The family names were compiled from newspaper clippings. If a family had young children then I added them to the list even if they were not reference in the clippings because I didn't think they would have been left at home. The notation AR (Abilene Reporter) means the name was listed in a newspaper clippings. Using Kathy Hartman's Pyle family records I computed the age of each of the listed attendees so it could be used to discriminate attendees based on age. Notes at the top of the spreadsheet explains some more about the spreadsheet and its contents. Jim Downing.

Pyle family location map.jpg: This give you a perspective on where the families came from when they converged in Abilene. Some families such as the Ivy Wells family from San Antonio are below the bottom of this map.

The Hardin Simmons campus where the reunion was held. The group photo was taken in front of Smith Hall which is right in the center of this photo.

This is Smith Hall. The group photo was taken in front of the windows at ground level on the right side wing.

This is one of several clippings from the Abilene Reporter that I used to compile the list of attendees for the reunion.

This another of the clippings. I was assisted by Edward Smith, Exec. Dir. Abilene Library in searching for these clippings.

0007_1921_Pyle family Reunion cutouts

These photos are cut outs from the 1921 Pile Reunion photo. They are presented here to assist in comparing people in the 1921 photo and the 1923 photo and with additional photos with prior identification provided for comparison purposes. (CF = xxx) denotes my confidence factor in the identification of individuals. CF = 100 means I have seen these people with my eyes and there is no doubt about who they are, CF between 60 and 90 means the person is identified in a comparison photo on the high end or the identification fits with all other evidence about other individual in attendance, CF between 40 and 60 means I think it is right but lack confirming evidence, CF less than 40 means the identification is an educated guess.
